Essential V’s Non-Essential Costs
A lot of companies endeavouring to survive the current economic climate are embarking on savage cost cutting programmes that entail the elimination of all spend that is deemed ‘not essential’.

It’s a fact that what costs are essential and what are not essential can change depending on your circumstances. The Association of Purchasing and Supply [APS] is currently experiencing an upsurge in enquiries from individuals uncertain of their future and wishing to be part of a group that will support them, help them find a job and upskill their abilities ready for the next turn in our economy. They want the support of a peer network and so membership of APS has suddenly been deemed an essential cost. Not an expensive cost but a cost that will bring its own rewards and pay for itself many times over.

Many companies however are unwittingly taking steps that are potentially increasing their costs, exacerbating inefficiencies and ensuring they are less equipped for a difficult economic climate. They are putting off training or cutting it altogether because it is not deemed ‘essential’.

On one hand they want the most efficient supply chain possible and on the other they are strangling the ability to meet or exceed their targets.  Untrained buyers and budget holders, unskilled or unfamiliar with supplier appraisals and professional negotiation techniques will fail to achieve the best deals.

For every day that staff are untrained in essential supply chain management best practice they are unknowingly costing your company thousands and thousands of euro extra. The more your company spends the more it is costing you. The more you need to save the greater the danger of failure when charging untrained buyers into the breech of cost reduction programmes.

At APS we have a series of short training programmes specifically focused at filling the skill needs to meet your supply chain challenges. If your company is trying to cut costs, improve efficiencies or just get better deals from your suppliers it is essential your staff are well prepared to get the best deals possible in the short and long term. Consider joining APS as an essential element of your personal and business strategy for growth.
